Is it possible for catalytic converter to go out?

I have had the catalytic converter change out twice within 10 month period. The check engine light come on again about two weeks ago. I took it to the mechanic and he mentioned that it was catalytic converter. Is it possible for them to go out that quick. Can somebody help?|||if you are not using factory catalysts , then they will prematurly wear out , but a major factor in taking out the catalyst prematurly is a rich running condition , and misfires , if a car is misfiring it allows raw fuel to go directly into the hot catalyst and melts the reducing beds inside the catalyst , also if this is a 96 or newer car , then have a technician do a duel scope on the upstream and downstream o2's , a lazy upstream o2 will trigger a false catalyst code , but this is not commen . also if you have any exhaust leaks before the catalytic converter , make sure these are taken care of , unmetered air entering the exhaust system will create lean condition in the catalyst thus raising the internal tempetures and melting the catalyst internally ,|||not unless you have other emmission related problems that are causing it...|||Ive heard that on some cars the CELCO after installing an after market catalytic converter. If you have this type of car you must cough up the dough for a genuine dealer part.

CELCO = Check Engine Light Comes On|||Have them do an exhaust pressure test, this will tell you for sure if the cat is bad, which it shouldn't be after that amount of time, unless you are SEVERELY abusing it. Another possibility, that yields some of the same symptoms as a bad catalytic converter is a MAP sensor. Sometimes reading the codes isn't enough to figure out what is wrong, it might just be process of elimination. (although usually the MAP sensor will throw a code/check engine light)|||Check your O2 sensor, it's about a 10-15.00 part that you can install yourself.|||They don't go out that quick!

When they do, it sounds like you have a can with a bunch of rocks it under the car.Do like other guy said and check your sensors. It really doesn't hurt anything if the converter is out unless you go through an emissions test like some states have. It might mean that your acheck engine light will be on all the time though.
