What are the symptoms of a bad catalytic converter?

Does a bad catalytic converter cause the coolant to get really hot? And the exhaust manifold to get red hot? Do I have to take the car to a shop to get the catalytic converter? Or can I do it myself? I am somewhat mechanically inclined. Thanks.|||I would bring it to a good shop and get an estimate. Then if you don't want pay the labor you know you are fixing the right thing from what they told you needs to be fixed.|||What this causes is back pressure. Your engine needs to Breathe. It does not allow the exhaust gasses to escape from the engine. The car will make a hissing sound and you will have no power, the more you push on the gas pedal the worse it will get. As far as replacing it yourself, that depends. Alot of them are welded in, if this is the case you would have to cut the pipe and install a new one. This can be a pain. If it is held on by clamps then you can remove the clamps loosen the convertor and slip it out. Intall the new one and put on new clamps.

Most of the time it's easier to have it done. About a 30-45 minute job at a shop. Jacked up and laying on your back doing this is a sever pain.|||wow , that could be a plugged cat. If you are in a state that has air pollution checks it is illegal to pull it off , some shops could supply / install a " converter test pipe " that is a straight run of pipe , exhaust work is a royal pain without a hoist .|||I think mine started rattling and falling off...that's how we knew it needed to be fixed.
