Catalytic converter?

i was wondering what exactly is in the catalytic converter on the cars and trucks.|||A "cat" contains a honeycomb pattern insert made of platinum and rodium, when hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide flow through with exhaust temperatures and oxygen they are converted to water and carbon dioxide. American cars no longer have air pumps installed, instead they have an addaptive strategy in the control module programming that switches the fuel mixture rich to lean about every second. This charges the cat with oxygen to catalize unwanted gases, also this gives the ECM the ability to test catalyst efficeincy by monitoring oxygen sensors before and after the cat, if there is a matching pattern on both sensors, the catalyst isn't working. A misfire can load the cat with fuel and cause extreme overheat and meltdown of the cat.|||A catalytic converter (colloquially, "cat" or "catcon") is a device used to reduce the toxicity of emissions from an internal combustion engine|||Inside a catalytic converter is a fibrous material that helps reduce the amount of pollution released to the atmosphere. If a car fitted with a catalytic converter starts to burn oil the converter will eventually block up and usually cause back pressure in the exhaust system and can cause cracked exhaust manifolds|||it contains small amounts of platinum and ceramics that heat up as hot exhaust goes through and gets even hotter burning off unburnt hydrocarbons and reducing emissions, cars with an air pump pump air into the catalyst to add oxygen and make it hotter for a more complete burn.the cat concerter basically burns wasted fuel from the engine.hope this carifies it for you!!
