What happens when you take off your catalytic converter?

I have a PO420 error code, which means a clogging catalytic converter. I'm thinking of having a bypass done for the car (It is legal where I live, no emissions testing). So what will happen, can you list the negative things? Thank you.|||For starters it will be a lot louder than it is now and second depending on the year, but if you are throwing codes now I'm sure it will set off many more codes on your computer like O2 sensors.|||You will have to do it yourself because no one will do it for you and No, A P0420 code does NOT mean your converter is clogging, it means that the catalyst efficiency is below the threshold! You failed to provide the vehicle information so I don't know if your vehicle is a 1996 or later model (if it is then you will have a MIL (malfunction indicator lamp) on. And NO, catalyst monitoring (by the ECM) has in no way anything to do with air/fuel decisions by the ECM, in fact, he may get slightly better fuel economy!|||Just because there is no testing doesn't mean that it is legal. Tampering with emissions devices is a federal crime, Many States have just decided that it is not cost effective to run immersions testing facilities any more. If you get pulled over and the cop wants to be a jerk you could still get in serious trouble.|||A malfunctioning or absent Catalytic Converter, can abe detected by an Exhaust Analysis, which many states require for operation in that state. If your vehicle does not pass this type inspection, an operating certificate would not be issued, and if you operated the vehicle without one, you could be fined.|||You're fuel economy will plummet.

Cut our the catalitic converter,

take a hammer and beat the crap out of it getting as much build up out as you can

weld it back into place.|||Nothing will happen it is frowned apon though give the environment a break
