What are the dangers of installing a universal catalytic converter?

My catalytic converter is going out. The OEM converter is 400 dollars, and one of the Magnaflow universal converters is 70.

Could using a universal converter hurt my car in any way? What differences could i expect to see?|||There are two types of Megnaflow converters, universal and direct fit. Either way, make sure it is CAF approved. The direct fit units are for those that do not need welding. Most often bolt in units. I think they are worth the few dollars more.

But if your converter is welded in (post 96 I believe is the cut off date), the replacement will also have to be welded in, or special connectors used.

The replacements will not hurt your car if a quality part is used (like the one you are talking about).

But before you spring for the cost of a new cat, try a tune up and some systems cleaner. The problem maybe cheaper to fix then you think.|||There is only danger by keeping a plugged up or broken internally converter on(fire hazard or stranded with no power) no danger by Replacement. I have replaced many converters and some were so restricted that the cars would only go 10 mph so I can't comment on how much more power your vechile will get without checking it out.

If there isn't any restriction problems with your converter you may see a 5% gain in mpg. If it is restriced the power and mpg gains will be hugh.|||The only problems with a universal are with getting the right adapters for it. Sometimes you end up fighting to get the thing to fit and hang right. If you have an O2 sensor in it, make sure the adapter is right and there is a long enough lead to it.

You may notice a difference in exhaust note but you may not.|||replace it as soon as possible universal converter is fine probably notice slight differant tone to car maybe a little more hourse power|||i put a universal converter on my car and i can,t see any difference in it then the old converter except it runs better now.
