How much does a new catalytic converter cost to put in a 1998 Chevrolet S-10 by a mechanic?

How much for just the catalytic converter and how much does the average mecahnic charge for the part and labor of changing a catalytic converter in a 1998 Chevrolet S-10?|||Cheaper ta go to a muffler shop, than a mechanic.........|||Do not go to midas. The way they check your cat is they cut it off and look inside to see if it's clogged, but they cannot be welded back on (it would not seal). So, even if you do not need one, you're buying one once they 'check' it for you. They told us that ours was bad because you could see light through it ( you're supposed to see light). Then when we asked for our part back, they gave us 'another' converter, not ours. My husband new it was not ours because before taking it to midas, he had been down there looking under the car. 'Ours' had a black mark on it ... and was bigger. So, anyway, ... DON'T GO TO MIDAS!! Check out rip-off.com|||105 $|||last one we got installed in the s10 was $75 for the converter plus labor, at the muffler shop. I think it was around $100 or $110 total bill.|||You are looking at $200-600 depending on if you go with an aftermarket or OEM converter. Do NOT put a used one on as this is illegal in most states.
