Can I take the catalytic converter off my truck?

I have a 05' Dodge Ram with the 5.7 HEMI, and was wondering if I could take the catalytic converter off, or will it screw up the computer? I've also been wanting to add cool air induction and possibly chipping it. Any info from somebody that has done any of this would be appreciated.|||Well, you already know it's not legal to do, but what you probably don't know it that it will cause your check engine light to come on. Your truck has o2 sensors before the converter and after it (to monitor the converters performance - an OBD 2 requirement). So removing it, or gutting it, will definitely set a fault code and turn on your check engine light. All in all, it's not a good idea. One more reason NOT to do it is that the 5.7 was specifically designed to run WITH a catalytic converter and the back pressure it creates in the exhaust system. As far as the cold air induction, I've seen several of them on trucks that come into the dealership and there doesn't seem to be any problems there. They add a little horsepower. The "chips", well they can add a good deal more horsepower by ramping up the fuel. They work wonders on the diesels, but I haven't used one on the 5.7 yet. Hopes this helps.|||yes it is illegal but some places dont have emmision inspections. I have had a 96 doge ram, 98, and an 02 all have had the 5.9 litre (360) You can cut the cat off but keep your 02 sensors and put them back in your pipe far apart, you will only have a check engine light on, and better MPG

|||On such a new vehicle I would definitely not remove the cat but instead maybe replace it with a hi-flow cat and/or chip also as stated above it is illegal and you will not pass emissions or inspection for that matter unless you get a stolen illegal sticker since all exhausts have to pass a visible inspection|||Taking off the catalytic converter will not only interfere with with the on-board computer, the engine management system, the fuel consumption and the emissions, it will also render your vehicle illegal in most places. Your vehicle is engineered to perform optimally across a broad spectrum of usage and it is not necessary to add cool air induction. This will not get you any better performance. A chip will get you either better fuel economy or worse fuel economy. My advise: keep your money and leave the truck alone. You will never get your money's worth.|||Sure, see you in cell block D.Lots of other things you can do without screwing up the air. The cat is the last thing you want to remove. Get an exhaust system, do the cold air thing, change your chip.Put on a turbo. but if your on the street leave the cat.|||you cant take the cat of its illegal.check summitracing.com for the chip and cold air intake heres the link

http://store.summitracing.com/egnsearch.鈥?/a>|||In all states it's illegal because it is a federal law / requirement|||First of all let me say that in most states it is illegal to remove this part. The reason why is because the purpose of it is to get rid of the harmful gases you engine produces. However you can remove it and replace it with a straigh pipe and the truck should still run. It is possible that by getting rid of this you can mess up your 02 sensor and hurt the engine in the long run but it is up to you.|||i love see people giving "PROFESSIONAL ANSWERS" LOL

removing cat will NOT damage at all your sensors

here in puerto rico at my shop we took them away daily for giving more power and don't damage nothing|||you can take it off but you will have a check engine light that will always stay on. And it is illegal to remove it anyway.|||Taking off your cat won't necessarily screw up your computer, but it will burn out your O2 sensors which in turn will throw off your computer and make your truck run really bad. Plus you won't be able to pass inspection.

I had a 98 Chevy truck that I actually hollowed out the cat and ran it for quite some time but I didn't think it made all that much of a performance difference and it was more of a hassle than it was worth in the long run.|||actually its not illegal where i live only because we don't have emiSSions (live in the country) and my car was a 96 impala ss ran true dual 02 sensors where b4 my cats so when i ran true dual with headers and flows no errors 19 extra hp and sounded like a monster i think its alot diff on newer model vehicles the high flow cat systems actually produce about same hp gain so u may wanna look into those|||its illegal and it wont increase your performance or gas milage I gutted mine and put it back on and the only difference was the sound level increased slightly. and now I'll have to pay a huge fine if the epa finds out

hope this helps|||It's illegal in all 50 states to remove your converter. It'll also throw a check engine light, which in most states, will keep you from passing safety/emissions inspection.

Today's converters don't restrict your exhaust enough to be a noticeable horsepower drain anyway.
