How would you know your catalytic converter needs to be replaced?

My Mercedes SUV started making terrible noises (it sounds like a monster truck when you start it up and when you accelerate), and a repair guy told me I needed to replace the catalytic converter, does this sound right?|||Could be. Sometimes the plates inside break loose and make excessive noise. The other reason is it can plug up and cause a lot of back pressure in the engine causing it to overheat. Long story short, they do go bad.|||Get for a second estimate for repairs. Other (cheaper) parts of the exhaust could be rusted out|||the exhaust system is designed to take the burned and unburned exhaust from the motor and exit the back of the suv.

If it is loud, then there is a leak somewhere and it needs to be repaired. Only someone that has done a visual inspection and observed what needs to be repaired can tell you if the cat needs to be replaced. If in doubt, get an estimate from another shop or dealer.|||Usually when the catalytic converter goes bad you notice poor performance, The engine cannot get rid of the exhaust fast enough and it bogs the motor. Now if it's loud, it could be a hole in the exhaust or muffler. I would get a second opinion from a muffler shop. Dont mention the catalytic converter and see what they say. How many miles on SUV? What year?|||he may be teling you the truth .often your exhaust pipe will break off right at the end of the converter.and the only way to repair this is to weld on a new converter.usually if the converter is actually bad and not broken it will put off a smell like rotten eggs.or if the inside wears out it will rattle.your best bet is to have the repair place put it on the lift and show you that it is broken.if they are honest they will do this if they wont they may be trying to rip you off. and the break may be elsewhere in your exhaust system costing you less.a converter installed should not cost nop more than one hundred seventy five .hope this helps|||This happend to me. I went and got a smog test, at our local gas station, for about 40 bucks.

It was confirmed that the problem was my CC but i didnt need a new one. It just needed to be repaired.

Kind regards, Wendy
